1. Ensure you take a snapshot of each vCenter server appliance management interface prior to following this update procedure. (MRSVCS01 and RLAVCS01).

  2. Ensure Rubrik is not backing up either system.

  3. Note which EXSI host each VM is currently running on.

  4. Sign into each EXSI host and ensure the snapshot is visible.

  5. Log in to the vCenter Server Appliance Management Interface (https://appliance-IP-address-or-FQDN:5480) as root.

    Example: https://vcsa.example.com:5480

    Note: For vSphere 7.x and 8.x, the vSphere SSO Administrator Credentials "[email protected]" can be used for patching the appliance instead of the root account

    Our current vCenter server management interfaces are running on: MRSVCS01 and RLAVCS01

  6. Click on Update tab.

  7. Ensure the CHECK UPDATES button is selected for CD ROM + URL.

  8. Select the target patch of vCenter. For more information about vCenter build numbers, see Build numbers and versions of VMware vCenter Server (326316).

  9. Click "STAGE ONLY



  10. Once staging has completed, click  "RUN PRE-UPDATE CHECKS".



  11. If any issues arise, acknowledge each and then proceed or stop the process.

  12. Click Install

  13. Read and accept the End user license Agreement.

  14. A system pre-check verifies that the patches can be successfully installed with the provided information.

  15. Sign in using the vSphere SSO Administrator password (ie: [email protected]).



  16. Confirm the vCenter Server has been backed up before clicking Finish.

  17. Patching will start. 

  18. Patching is complete when the message "Installation succeeded" is shown.


If any issues occur and you need to revert to the snapshot taken prior to the update do the following:

  1. Navigate to the EXSI host the VM was running on (for example: https://rla-esxi03.mopt.vic.gov.au/ui/#/host/vms/193)

  2. Select the VM and then click Actions.

  3. Click Snapshots, manage snapshots and then revert if necessary.
