Required:
Network patch cables (Internet cables)
Network switch (with available port)
Patch panel (labeled)
Device (e.g. laptop) for end-user testing
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Identify the Wall Port
Locate the wall port in the user's area (e.g., under desk, on wall).
-
Note the label on the wall port e.g.,
F09
, RLA-NW-L1 175(RLA North West Comms room Level 1)
2. Go to the Comms Room
Locate the corresponding Comms Room & patch panel for that Port.
Find the matching port label on the patch panel (the label should match the wall port label or have a corresponding number).
3. Patch the Port to the Switch
Take a network patch cable and plug one end into the identified patch panel port.
Plug the other end into an available port on the network switch (preferably a port in the same VLAN/subnet as the user needs).
Ensure the switch port is configured correctly (e.g., access port, proper VLAN assignment).
Identify Switch Port Number
4. Test the Connection
Use a Laptop or Test Device
Plug a laptop into the wall port.
-
Check:
The NIC lights are active (indicating a physical link).
The laptop receives an IP address (via DHCP).
Can access internal network or internet.
-
Switch Port LEDs
Observe the LED activity lights on the switch. Ports with active connections will typically show solid or blinking lights.
Tips and Best Practices
Use shortest practical length to avoid cable mess.
Verify switch port is not disabled or shut down.
Maintain proper cable management inside comms rack.
